In this interview, Josh interviews Kyle T. Kramer, author of A Time to Plant: Life Lessons in Work, Prayer and Dirt. Just in time for Good Friday and Earth Day, this podcast comes in a long line of other environmentally concerned podcasts by the Nick and Josh crew. Remember: An Oil Spill Round Table Discussion with Ben Lowe, Tom Sine and Julie Clawson, Matthew Sleeth, and Tom Sine of the Mustard Seed Associates? Kyle is not only a farmer, academic, father and eco-ascetic, but also a alumni of Emory's Youth Theological Initiative and the Candler School of Theology. For more information on this subject, listen to the first few minutes of the interview.

This week we have Cliff Shiepe talking about self publishing his new novel.

Cliff has an interesting life that mixes ministry with the entertainment industry and his first novel puts one foot in each of those spheres. What I found most interesting about Cliff's story is that he did not intend to write a novel and when it was all said and done, he did all the work and it took him ten years. I thought that was a powerful story for those of us anxious to get some thoughts on paper and get them out there.

Cliff gives some good advise for artists/writers and he talks about his novel.

This podcast is a round table discussion between Prof. Kendra Creasy Dean and students in a research seminar class at the Candler School of Theology (of which Josh was a part). A class made up of youth ministry practitioners, some of whom are full-time students and some of whom are auditing the class, this podcast pokes at the heart of some of the real down to earth issues in youth ministry today. If you have not already read Dean's book Almost Christian make sure to check it out today! Also, a big thanks is owed to Dr. Beth Corrie of the Youth Theological Initiative for allowing the podcast to broadcast this conversation.

Jim Wallis does the forward and says this about the book:"is a story of how Adam and many of his cohorts are shaping the next strategies for faith-based social change; a theology for social justice; a spirituality for young activists; a handbook for those who want to experiment with activism and search out their own vocation in the world; and a strategy manual that draws lessons from past movements for change."

In this interview, Josh interviews Rachel Held Evans, author of Evolving in Monkey Town. The two talk bout Rachel's life growing up in fundamentalist Christianity and her process of encountering new questions from unsuspecting places; namely other people's stories. This is a fun and light-hearted podcast that is surely to connect with anyone who's looking for a conversation about how to handle faith when all sure footing seems to be slipping away. Indeed, as Rachel jokes, this is a Donald Miller kind of read.

And while you are buying books, don't forget to pick up Nick's book, The Hopeful Skeptic. Every time he sells a copy, his bones grow back together a little more.

Oh and listening on to the podcast, my favorite part is at the end when Josh says, "so you can get the book at rachel held evans. . . or somewhere." Or somewhere? That's classic.

In this podcast, Josh grabs an interview with Dr. David Pacini from the Candler School of Theology. Dr. Pacini's current research focuses on problems in Kantian and post-Kantian philosophy and philosophical theology, especially those of aesthetics and psychology as they evolved in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century texts that explore the boundaries of theological thinking. Well, this is about as good as it goes for dramatic readings! Based on the blog post by Rick Bennet entitled "an imagined conversation: Oscar Round-Table with Mark Driscoll, Brian McLaren, Ed Young, Jr, David Dark and the Rev. Smith, pastor of Berean Baptist Church," Josh grabbed this reading with a group of folk sitting around for dinner and drinks after the last session of Theology After Google (Claremont 2010).

Mark Driscoll: Ryan Parker

Brian McLaren: Joshua Case

Ed Young Jr: Chad Crawford

David Dark: Tony Jones

We had a great conversation with Jessica Jackley Flannery of Kiva (co-founder with her husband Matt). If you're not familiar with Kiva . . . this is a great chance to get to know them and what they're about. And if you're already a fan and partner . . . then you can hear Jessica talk about a variety of things including social networking in giving, flattened relational models, the power of women in power, and Kiva's leveraging of their relationships with big business Silicon Valley giants for their role in micro-loans.

In this episode, Joshua Case gives us a talk given by Marian Wright Edelman, president, Children’s Defense Fund at the Re-Envisioning Leadership conference hosted by The Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Marian Wright Edelman has been a lifelong advocate for the disadvantaged worldwide. Under her leadership, the Children’s Defense Fund has become one of the strongest known voices for children and families. Its mission is to "leave no child behind" and to ensure every child a "healthy and fair" start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Her writings include Families in Peril: An Agenda for Social Change; The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours; and I Can Make a Difference: A Treasury to Inspire Our Children.

Another old episode with a new intro.

Josh Case and I are in an airy outside venue to get the organic intro, pieced together from patches of awesomeness.

A.J. Jacobs is an author that not only works for Esquire, but wrote the smash hit, A Year of Living Biblically.

Here is A.J.'s site.

This week we have another stunning intro and a conversation with Kevin Roose who tried on a whole different personality for a semester of school.

"What would happen if a student at one of America’s most secular colleges spent a semester at Reverend Jerry Falwell’s “Bible Boot Camp” for young evangelicals?"

Another awesome intro by Nick and Josh C.

So this week Nick interviews Phyllis Tickle the Matron Saint of the Great Emergence. She is also the author of many books, most notably The Divine Hours and The Night Offices. She is also an incredible speaker and you may have caught her at some emergent gatherings.

In the second part she gives an incredible illustration of society and how societal changes relate to our concepts of truth, religion, and understanding.

We have been working with this one for a while now. Sorry its short, but it was choppy due to some technical problems, instead of putting up the crappy parts, we saved the best for you guys.

Josh Case and Nick are together for an intro that lasts almost as long as the podcast, sorry about that, but there is some classic stuff in it.

Please make sure you are subscribed, and please rate us in iTunes.

Anyway, here it is, and check out Bart Ehrman's new book, Jesus Interrupted.

This week I give a brief intro about going back to a weekly schedule, and who we will have on for next week's show. Then we get to the meat and potatoes and have a great phone interview with the honorable Bishop John Shelby Spong. He talks about his newest book Jesus for the Non-Religious - a book I would call a must read.

Patrick Fore did our newest album art, check out his design at http://www.patrickforedesign.com/

And as I mentioned there is a Mailing List on the top right corner of our website, that I would be delighted if you joined. There is also a free eBook available from our website.

Josh Case interviews Barbara Brown Taylor and talks about her latest book, An Alter in the World.

From her website:

In her critically acclaimed memoir Leaving Church, Taylor wrote about leaving parish ministry to become a teacher, a decision that rearranged everything from her wardrobe to her faith. Now in her stunning follow-up, An Altar in the World, she reveals how she learned to encounter the God who does not live in church.

Describing spiritual practices as basic as walking, carrying water, being with other people, and saying blessings, she calls conventional distinctions between the sacred and the secular into question. Delving into darker practices of getting lost, falling ill, feeling pain, and grieving loss, she challenges the notion that God does God’s best work in the light. Throughout this richly personal narrative, she suggests that no physical act is too earthbound to become a path to the divine. The world is full of altars, she says, for those willing to welcome the truth that comes to them in the flesh.
